Booking Through Thursday: Writing Challenge

  • Pick up the nearest book. (I’m sure you must have one nearby.)
  • Turn to page 123.
  • What is the first sentence on the page?
  • The last sentence on the page?
  • Now . . . connect them together….

Okay, I had to cheat on this one a little bit. The first book by me was The Toddler Cookbook and it doesn't have a page 123. The next one was a dictionary and that doesn't exactly have sentences. (The first word on page 123 was Cain.) The third had an acronym in it I didn't know and didn't feel like making something up for it. So, the forth nearest book was...Footprints in Time.

First Sentence: He jumped up and moved his feet rapidly, trampling on something.
Last Sentence: He stared at Jack, stunned.

He jumped up and moved his feet rapidly, trampling on something. He looked down and saw his black cat Whiskers who always seemed to be in his way. He glared at the cat, but continued to move his feet towards the ringing phone. What if it was her?

He reached out to answer, but no one was there. He was too late and it was the cat's fault. He returned to his computer and continued with his homework assignment. But he couldn't focus on it, what if it was her. When he gave her his number he didn't actually think she would call. No, no, he told himself, it was just a wrong number. Why are you getting your hopes up? What was he thinking when he gave Monica Wilks his phone number?

He turned back to the screen and stared at the blinking cursor. He watched it, letting it hypnotize him until he heard someone at the door. The doorknob jiggled and he heard Jack's muffled voice as he cursed at the door.

"Damn it, Steve! Can you come help me please."

He gave another reluctance glance at the computer screen, checked for the cat, and slumped over to the door. Jack was standing on the landing with an armload of old comics. "Look what I just found in the attic!" Steve was interested to see what treasures might be found in the pile.

Jack set the pile down on the coffee table and glanced up. "Oh, and guess what?"

"What?"

"I have a date tonight." Steve tried to suppress the shock he felt. Jack continued, "With Monica Wilks, how awesome is that?"
He stared at Jack, stunned.

  1. I think you're the first person I've seen who did this correctly.

  2. That's a terrific addition! I was too lazy to do much of anything this week, I admit, with the BTT. I am enjoying reading some of the responses though. I think yours is my favorite. :-)
