Well, another ten days have slipped by from the last time that I blogged. The good news is 
that I finally got out of my reading slump by forcing myself to listen to audiobooks. I appreciate having that option and they have been particularly engaging for me.
As I talked about previously, I have been reading Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy in the car and I have made even more progress with that. The other night I got some chick soft tacos and drove up a hill. I sat there and listened to my book, had my dinner, and watched the sunset. It ended up being very refreshing.
I have been wanting to read Heir Apparent for a while now. I knew it was about a girl who gets stuck inside a virtual reality game. Basically it sounded just like the type of science fiction I enjoy best. But I didn’t really like it. The story was compelling and I did want to know what was going to happen in the end. But I also felt like the story suffered from huge plot holes and elements that were just uninteresting to me. It is unfortunate when a book you are desperate to read is a disappointment. Yet, there is still a nice feeling in finishing it.
I haven’t been reading it recently, but a lot of people have recommended to Earthsea books to me time and time again. I have tried reading the first book in both paper and audio and I am determined to finish it eventually. I can see why people like it, but it isn’t my thing. Of course that can change over the course of the book. At first I didn’t really like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy but then in the end it pulled through. I think I may have asked this before, but it doesn’t hurt to revisit the topic. What books did you dislike that everyone else seems to enjoy or often gets recommended to you?
I am so glad you were able to overcome the reading slump, Megan. Your description of watching the sunset while listening to a book sounds wonderful--very relaxing.

To answer your question, One Hundred Years of Solitude is one that I read and didn't care for despite people telling me I'd love it. The J.D. Robb series comes to mind too. I read the first couple of books in the series because so many others were raving about them. They did absolutely nothing for me. The series is still recommended to me regularly.
Outlander and The Eyre Affair are 2 that stand out in my mind!

ReplyDeleteI am a very interesting reader. I will sometimes love a book in a certain genre niche and then hate another in the same niche. It can be crazy. But as far as recommendations are concerned, I had J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye recommended to me a couple of years ago. My friend loved this book. I hated it. I really did. And I hate it when I don't like a classic. I also never got into the Shopaholic series, also recommended to me (but by someone who did not know me too well), or my newest one was The Italian Lover. All the blogging world seems to love this book and I thought it was a bore and couldn't finish it. You never know.
